Meguro-ku area guide

Meguro-ku area guide

Meguro-ku, is a popular area for women 30-40 years old to live in. Many fashionable and trendy specialty stores and high-end sweet shops line the stylish streets.

Meguro Station is situated on the very edge of the eastside of the ward. In fact, the station is actually located in Shinagawa-ku. Meguro-ku stretches from Yamate Street to Meguro Street.

Meguro-ku is known as a town to go to for shopping. And it has to be mentioned that “Jiyugaoka” is where many specialty sweets shops and stylish, sensible stores line the lavish streets. The area is very popular for visiting international tourists.

Another popular spot is “Nakameguro” where over 800 beautiful cherry blossom trees compete with the surrounding landscape along 3.8 kilometers of the Meguro River. Numerous cafes, stylish restaurants, and original brand name clothes and accessory stores also line the riverside attracting many young people to the area.

In addition, furniture and unique interior decorating shops are also located along the streets from Otori shrine to the Himonya area, locally called the “Furniture Street”.
Himonya is popular because it is close to “Gakugei-daigaku” and “Toritsu-daigaku” stations. The “Daiei Himonya store”, a famous supermarket with the top retail sales nationwide, is located here. The “Don Quixote” store is located near Nakameguro station on Yamate street and is a convenient place for local residents.

The exclusive residential areas of “Nakameguro”, “Kakinokizaka”, “Himonya” and “Yakumo” are located in Meguro-ku. The north side of Meguro-ku is where the famous residential area “Aobadai” is found with its many luxurious single family houses and celebrity residences.

Meguro-ku has a population of about 268,000 residents. More women in their 30’s to 40’s live here than in any other ward in Tokyo Prefecture. The ratio of renters to homeowners is the lowest in Tokyo Prefecture, with homeowners accounting for 48% and renters 52%.
This area was originally developed with many single family houses. There are very few large high-rise condominium located here even around the station. You won’t see a lot of new construction in this ward.
